What is pilates?

Pilates mat work

More complex than other forms of exercises, pilates, a fusion of western and eastern philosophies, teaches you about breathing with movement, body mechanics, balance, co-ordination, positioning of the body, strength and flexibility. For full benefit of the method, you’ll learn to flow from one movement to the next building stamina and cardiovascular fitness, with the basic principles of the pilates exercise repertoire:

Forward Fitness, believes in working with mind and body and using the body’s 'centre', developing core inner strength to perform the exercises correctly. Pilates is a discipline to be learnt and used as a life skill.

Mat work classes use no specialised pilates equipment.  All clients follow the same exercise routine.  Levels are beginner and intermediate.  Advanced Clients are in own class or 1:1.

The low-impact technique is designed to improve posture and strengthen and lengthen muscles without adding bulk. The emphasis on breathing leaves the client revitalized not exhausted.

Understanding the Terminology

Many different terms are used to explain how to perform movements/positions in class. Every effort is made to ensure you understand them. However, everyone visualises them differently, so it is suggested that you make a note of them in a way you understand. For maximum benefit during the class, it is essential that you understand what you are trying to achieve, if you are having difficulty with this please let me know during the class.
